Levi Beamish wrote in and asked us to check out a ‘video portrait’ he made with a, “simple practical effect achieved by stacking 100 video layers, pushing each layer one frame out of sync and [then] cropping [it] to 1% of [its original] size”. It’s the same concept used in the ‘Vital Signs’ video we posted back in March (be sure to check that one out of you haven’t seen it yet).
Short but sweet, we likey. The Kid Cudi backing tune was a nice touch, Levi; its just right for the visuals. Thanks for writing in!

This creation myth was written, directed and created by Tony Comley – the super-talented guy behind D N A U X B (If you haven’t watched that yet do so immediately; it’s fantastic.) – as part of the Animator in Residence program at the University of Wales. Tony, and the UoW students who were lucky enough to work with him, turned this around in only three weeks. Impressive. The entire piece was also animated entirely on a Powerbook G4. Even more impressive. The authoritative, gravelly and stoic voice-over is delivered by Roger Wooster backed with a score composed by Charlie Piper.
We’re big fans of how Tony animates his explosions, blips and ‘force waves’ (for lack of a better term); there’s a unique, expressive energy to each and every one. Truly a treat for the eyes. Enjoy!

Love this surfing video by filmmaker Iker Elorrieta. Elorrieta filmed at night off the Canary Islands of Spain, then edited (adding stars and moon, effects) to create a beautiful short piece. I hope he tries his hand at a longer feature soon.

“Strata-cut animation is most commonly a form of clay animation in which a long bread-like “loaf” of clay, internally packed with varying imagery, is sliced into thin sheets, with the animation camera taking a frame of the end of the loaf for each cut, eventually revealing the movement of the internal images within.”
In the mid-90’s David Daniels revived and refined the stratacut animation technique that was originally pioneered in the 1920s by German animator Oskar Fischinger. The attached video is a montage of some of Daniels’ best sequences – prepare yourselves to bask in the weirdness. Enjoy!

Eric Epstein conceived, directed, edited, animated and composited – with production assistance from m ss ng p eces – this monster of a music video for Memory Tapes. It’s perfect viewing material for a late-night weekend decompression and chill session so we heartily recommend you watch it on the largest, highest-definition screen you’ve got. The whole thing is weird, well executed and wonderful but we especially enjoyed the flocking birds sequence at the end. All-in-all a treat, friends – enjoy!

We featured the original music video for ‘True Loves’ by Hooray For Earth not too long ago so we were pleasantly surprised when Mark wrote in to inform us that Cyriak recently completed a video for the Cereal Spiller’s remix of the same tune. Shit’s dope folks, what else would you expect from Sir Cyriak himself? If you’ve got an HDTV to watch this on I heartily recommend you dig out whatever cable/dongle you need to get your computer hooked up to it cause this video is perfect for viewing on a comfy couch in a darkened room with the sound cranked. Enjoy!
