“Out in the world, not much happened. But here in the special night, a land bricked with paper and leather, anything might happen, always did.” -Ray Bradbury
Thanks for commissioning stuff like this, New Zealand Book Council.

“Back in my day, we had to animate weird stuff by hand!” -Rinat Gazizov
The above isn’t actually a quote from Mr. Gazizov but they just don’t make ‘em quite like this anymore.
A big thanks goes to Alex Delogu for the heads-up...cheers! (By the looks of his tumblr, you can tell he’s a kindred spirit.)

Kilian Martin looks more than comfortable while taking his board around Barcelona in this short, but amazing freestyle skating video. I especially love the tricks involving multiple boards. Very impressive stuff.

To me, the unifying quality of Jeremy Geddes’ work (besides his excellent draftsmanship and tight control over oils) is that each image he creates is so quiet. His paintings exude a stillness that is vaguely unsettling (nearly frightening, really) but strangely peaceful as well.
Frou-frou art BS aside, they are an absolute treat to look at. If you’d like to see more, check out Jeremy’s website.
I’ll be unable to post much this weekend so if you’ve got some stuff that you think would be great for The Tripatorium™ don’t hesitate to send it over so I can do a big update once I’m back to my usual routine of habitually staring at LCD screens.

“[Paprika is] evidence that Japanese animators are reaching for the moon while most of their American counterparts remain stuck in the kiddie sandbox.” -Manolha Dargis The New York Times

This is like a moving DAIM or SYCO03 piece…only wilder and more tech-heavy. If I’m honest, it could use a tighter edit but don’t let that stop you from watching it all the way through cause the ending is pretty rad. As is the soundtrack by Christ. No, not that dude with the holes in his hands, this guy.

Those orchids are sexy, tricksy little minxes, I tell you.
Did you know that vanilla comes from orchids? Or that orchids are virtually immortal? It’s true (providing you take good care of them, of course). There are individual plants that are still alive today that were first brought to England in the 1800s. Whoa.
The above video is from the excellent BBC produced series ‘The Private Life of Plants’ hosted by none other than Sir David Attenborough.

Did you know that cuttlefish are super-smart invertebrates? In fact, out of all known animals without spines, they have the largest brain-to-body ratio.
FUN FACT: Sepia ink – made popular due to it’s wide use in photographic toning (also known as sepia tone) – was originally harvested from cuttlefish.
