Chute

Absolutely loving Mathias Lachal’s graduation film from his time at Emile Ecole. The fluidity of motion his animation exhibits reminds me a lot of Shinichirō Watanabe‘s work, especially the smooth action sequences in Samurai Champloo. We expect great things from Mathias in the future and will be keeping close watch on his Vimeo account.

A big thanks goes to Tyler Vanston for another fantastic suggestion. Speaking of suggestions, we’ve been inundated with lots of great submissions over the past few weeks and are doing our best to catch up. Be assured: we check out each-and-every one so keep em’ coming, friends.

Civilization

“Lost in the silence, they bow to the call of the east;
Tantalized and seduced by the demons released.
Ears to the ground by the name of the merciless guide,
Onto the fire that burns in the all seeing eye.”

The latest music video from Justice, directed by Edouard Salier, is just what you’d expect: awesome. Enjoy!

No Brain

I came across this little gem last night when I was browsing around the Vimeo Staff pics (one of the mountain-born tributaries that regularly flow down into rivière de La Tripatorium™) and knew it had to be posted soon as possible. Soon after, I checked the submissions and found out that one of our readers, Dan Allen, had send it in that very same day. KISMET!

On the Mueller scale of trippiness – as I’m sure you recall from your third grade earth-science lessons – ‘No Brain’ rates at a respectable 9.2835/10 which puts it in league with such favorites as The Music Scene, Combination Spawns and The Parachute Ending. In other words: shit is dope.

You know the drill: volume up, lights dimmed, headphones on and full-screen. Oh! Right! The credits! Direction by Fleur & Manu, production DIVISION Paris and post production by MATHEMATIC. Enjoy!

Iron

“I’m frozen to the bones, I am
A soldier on my own, I don’t know the way;
I’m riding up the heights of shame.
I’m waiting for the call, the hand on the chest;
I’m ready for the fight, and fate…”

The word ‘epic’ springs immediately to mind. Do me a favor? Don’t watch this until you’ve got some time set aside to chill, dim the lights and don some headphones cause this shit is dope and deserves your undivided attention. Tunes and direction courtesy of Yoann Lemoine (a.k.a. Woodkid) with cinematography by Mathieu Plainfosse and post-production via OneMore Prod in Paris. Woodkid’s IRON EP is available now on iTunes. Enjoy!

Jesus2000

In honor of ‘good’ Friday I thought I’d post this 100% historically accurate animated short on the life of our Lord and savior, Jesus of Nazareth. JESUS2000 was produced in 2009 at WIZZ with concept & art-direction by CRCR (the minds behind TODOR & PETRU), sound design by Philippe Valette with electro jamz composed by R-Ash. Enjoy!

Innocence

“Neurosis only attaches itself to fertile ground where it can flourish.
The thrill of fear – thought I’d never admit it – the thrill of fear: now greatly enjoyed with courage.”

It’s a Björk two-for Tuesday! This particular video was directed and animated by Dimitri Stankowicz (currently employed at Passion Pictures) as an entry into the official ‘Innocence’ video contest. Dimitri’s submission didn’t win – he was one of the ten runners up – but was lucky enough to be included on the official Voltaic DVD. We’re diggin’ it.

Todor & Petru

Five students from French school of animation (and awesome), Gobelins – Remi Bastie, Nicolas Dehghani, Jonathan Djob Nkondo, NIcolas Pegon and Jérémy Pires – created this stop-motion/2D animated trip-fest of a music video during their internship at WIZZ (you know, that super-rad production house that makes stuff like this).  It’s deliciously strange and surprisingly bizarre which, coincidentally, is just how I likes ‘em. Oh, and the backing tune is ‘Judgement Day’ by UK grime hip-hop outfit, The Thunderclaps. Enjoy!

Matatoro

A gorgeously animated take on the bizarre world of bullfighting packed with strange visions, hallucinations and loads of symbolism. It’s rather nice, really. MATATORO was directed and animated by Mauro Carraro, Raphaël Calamote and Jérémy Pasquet, all students at the Arles campus of Supinfocom in France. Well done, lads!

Trois petits points

De Lucrèce Andreae, Alice Dieudonne, Tracy Nowocien, Florian Parrot, Ornélie Prioul and Rémy Schaepman – third year students at french school-of-awesome, Gobelins – are responsible for this poignant allegory about post-WWI Germany.

If you’re interested in process as much as product (like I am), you’ll probably dig these ‘making of’ videos from Rémy and Tracy, too.

Café allongé

An overactive imagination and a raging sex drive can lead to some bizarre and inventive visions. Kudos to french director Maxime Paccalet and the talented folks at Kawanimation for putting this together. Cheers!

After the Rain

Here we have an animated short from Gobelins students Charles-André Lefebvre, Manuel Tanon-Tchi, Louis Tardivier, Sébastien Vovau and Emmanuelle Walker that’s colorful, original, and just plain fun. Emmanuelle, in particular, has some great videos on her Vimeo page and, if you’re a Paris-lover like myself, then this particular one should do the trick. Here’s hoping for more, and in HD please!

Truckers Delight

First off, this video is definitely NSFW so if you’re checking this out at your 9-5 you might wanna save it for later. That being said, this pixel-crafted wonder of a music video by Jérémie Périn for Flairs is a nostalgic revisit to the days when 16-bit electronic diversions reigned supreme.  If you’ve got an iOS device and want to take control of the lewd trucker himself then click here to get in on the fun.

You Look Familiar

Michélé De Feudis and Joris Bergmans directed/designed this colorful, bizarre and strangely poignant video for the Team William tune ‘You Look Familiar’. It’s an absolute treat that I watched a few times in quick succession so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Musicothérapie

This animated short from Clement Picon, Amael Isnard and Manuel Javelle is infectious, high-energy and contains heaping doses of bizarre. Resistance is futile. Just let go.

Sing Sang Sung

French animation house, Mathematic, created this music video about the whimsical, peaceful, rambling journey of a black dot for two of their fellow countrymen, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel a.k.a. Air.  Ingesting this healthy dose of happy tunes and gorgeous high-definition visuals is an all-around great way to start your week. Enjoy!

Un tour de manège

Another stunner from french school of awesome, Gobélins. This tale about growing up, love and loss of innocence was lovingly crafted, completely without dialogue in a beautiful watercolor aesthetic, by De Nicolas Athane, Brice Chevillard, Alexis Liddell, Françoise Losito and Mai Nguyen with sound design by Vincent Hazard and music from Pablo Pico. It’s gorgeous, gorgeous, GORGEOUS stuff – CHEERS!

Scintillation

French filmmaker Xavier Chassaing put together this stunner by combining over 35,000 photographs utilizing “an innovative mix of stop motion and live projection mapping techniques.”

Come back down

A visual journey – created by Clement Picon – that’s perfect for contemplation and reflection.  The soundtrack by Jviewz is a fitting accompaniment to the visuals and ties the whole affair together rather nicely.  Best served late at night with the lights dimmed.

8Bits

This gorgeous animated short was created by Valere Amirault, Jean Delaunay, Sarah Laufer and Benjamin Mattern.  If you grew up on a steady diet of pixels – that were dispensed in increments of eight or sixteen – and/or love well-animated short films this is a must-watch.
