“Now that television transmissions have gone completely digital you have probably seen this effect before. You’re watching TV and then suddenly the image freezes. Then, instead of glitching back to the next shot, its as if the next shot appears to be wearing the information from the previous shot. It’s a surreal effect that can be hard to explain.”
Don Whitaker (of Squircle Zoom fame) wrote in to tell us about a video mashup technique called ‘datamoshing’ that, “uses video compression artifacts as a composition tool”. If you’re interested in trying it for yourself be sure to check out this three part tutorial that utilizes free, readily-available-on-the-internets software.
The attached music video – for the tune Mande Burung by Odelia – was created by Charlie Visnic and is an excellent application of the technique. Mind-bending, mellow and trip-tastic – enjoy!

Wanderlust

I had mentioned Wanderlust before but never got around to posting the actual video which is a fairly egregious oversight considering 1) it kicks serious ass and 2) we have featured loads of other cool-but-not-as-cool-as-this Björk stuff. One of our readers, Chris, wrote in and suggested it was time to make that shit happen and so here we are.
Oh! Now I remember why I didn’t post it! It’s ‘cause it hadn’t been uploaded in HD to the ‘Tubes yet! Ok, whatever; this is unimportant. What is important is who made it: Isaiah Saxon, Sean Hellfritsch and Daren Rabinovitch, a.k.a. Encyclopedia Pictura. They’re crazy talented dudes and have recently started to upload lots of great watchables to their Vimeo and YouTube pages, like this great process video on how they made Wanderlust.
NOTE: If you have one of those fancy 3D TVs/computers you can experience Wanderlust with an additional dimension. That’s 50% more dimensions than 2D! Enjoy!

The unique visual style of Studio Shelter paired with the feel-good, uplifting, summer’s-here sound of Cassette Schwarzenegger is a winning combination. The whole video is great but I’m especially fond of the more abstract sequences (like the ones at 1:16 and 3:24). It’s good times all around folks – enjoy!

Everything about ‘Loom’ is right: the animation, the pacing, the gorgeous sound design, the cinematography, the concept – everything. Don’t watch this until you’ve got some time set aside to really soak it in. That means headphones, full-screen, HD, dimmed lights and your full, undivided attention; prepare yourself for a treat.

Kiwi animator/director Mike Scott crafted a veritable pixely-video-game-pop-culture-references-packed orgy of a music video for the Goldfish tune, ‘We Come Together’. It’s good times all the way ‘round, folks.
Mike was also cool enough to post a fairly exhaustive process video that describes how he planned and executed the whole thing which you can watch here. Enjoy!

Haroshi on Deck

John Kenn’s “Post-It” Art
John Kenn is an animator for children’s television shows in Denmark, but in his spare time he likes to draw these monster scenes on yellow stationary notes. They are very reminiscent of Edward Gorey, as I’m sure a lot of people will notice. It’s impressive that this is what this guy just does for fun. Check out his full gallery for more awesomeness.
