Play

The unique visual style of Studio Shelter paired with the feel-good, uplifting, summer’s-here sound of Cassette Schwarzenegger is a winning combination. The whole video is great but I’m especially fond of the more abstract sequences (like the ones at 1:16 and 3:24). It’s good times all around folks – enjoy!

Loom

“Blindness to suffering is an inherent consequence of natural selection. Nature is neither kind nor cruel but indifferent.”Richard Dawkins

Everything about ‘Loom’ is right: the animation, the pacing, the gorgeous sound design, the cinematography, the concept – everything. Don’t watch this until you’ve got some time set aside to really soak it in. That means headphones, full-screen, HD, dimmed lights and your full, undivided attention; prepare yourself for a treat.

Cheers to Polynoid for the fantastic execution: direction by Jan Bitzer, Ilija Brunck and Csaba Letay, technical direction from Fabian Pross and sound design by Joel Corelitz of waveplant. Lots of other talented folks were involved so be sure to check out the full credits.

Some well deserved gratitude is owed to Sam Lillard for the excellent submission: thanks, Sam!

We Come Together

“I made a good versus evil story of smooth jazz cats versus electro fishes and, like a video game, there was a princess to rescue, sub-bosses and a final boss to defeat…more” –Mike Scott

Kiwi animator/director Mike Scott crafted a veritable pixely-video-game-pop-culture-references-packed orgy of a music video for the Goldfish tune, ‘We Come Together’. It’s good times all the way ‘round, folks.

Mike was also cool enough to post a fairly exhaustive process video that describes how he planned and executed the whole thing which you can watch here. Enjoy!

Peace On The Rise

“We can sit around this fire and let our spirits ride on out; watch it as a flame gets higher. I can see it in your eyes, whispers on the rise.”

Hey, guess what? I have some fantastic news!. Chad VanGaalen just posted another music video for a tune he released on Sub Pop and it’s exactly what you’d expect: chill, psychedelic and über-trippy. Enjoy!

Patrick Smith, we are forever in your debt for passing it along...cheers!

Batabib/Knowing

From the looks of it ‘Knowing’ is a pretty awful movie – I haven’t seen it mind you but, in my experience, the hive mind is fairly reliable about these sorts of things. Anyways, so I’m on the ‘tubes and come across this video – created by musicaeternal – that combines Björk’s ethereal ‘Batabib’ with some scenes from the flick and it all works together rather well. Alex Proyas sure knows how to make some tasty visuals.

Destino

“Destino is unique in that its production originally began in 1945, 58 years before its eventual completion. The project was a collaboration between American animator Walt Disney and Spanish painter Salvador Dalí, and features music written by Mexican songwriter Armando Dominguez and performed by Dora Luz…more

During production of Fantasia 2000 Walt Disney’s nephew, Roy, found some storyboards and a scant 17 seconds of animation that were created by Disney and Dali and decided to resurrect the long dormant project. If you’re interested, head on over to Destino’s wikipedia entry to read lots more.

A big thanks goes to kiefer printy for passing this gem along…cheers!

Vessel

“We’d been looking into an old 3D technique called “Anaglyph”, which is the familiar red and cyan version of 3d that you used to get on the back of cereal boxes. The more we looked at various images that used this technique, the more we fell in love with the colours and decided that they should drive the aesthetic of the piece…The song is full of light and shade; with euphoric melodies and skipping glitchy beats. It seemed to us that themes of ‘duality’ ran through both the song and our visual idea.”

Absolutely loving this music video BISON (a.k.a. Owen Silverwood and Dave Bullivant) put together for the Four Tet remix of ‘Vessel’ by Jon Hopkins (released by Domino and available now on iTunes & AmazonMP3). It’s ethereal, contemplative and gorgeous stuff – perfect for some rainy-day chillage. Big ups to Justine Josephs for the fantastic styling and Claire Meehan for lending her dance expertise, the two in tandem are a powerful combination. Cheers!

P.S. If you’re into dance, near Des Moines on Friday and want to get in one last great party before the Apocalypse then stop by Glaza Studio for End of Days – it looks like it’s going to be a pretty rad time.

No Brain

I came across this little gem last night when I was browsing around the Vimeo Staff pics (one of the mountain-born tributaries that regularly flow down into rivière de La Tripatorium™) and knew it had to be posted soon as possible. Soon after, I checked the submissions and found out that one of our readers, Dan Allen, had send it in that very same day. KISMET!

On the Mueller scale of trippiness – as I’m sure you recall from your third grade earth-science lessons – ‘No Brain’ rates at a respectable 9.2835/10 which puts it in league with such favorites as The Music Scene, Combination Spawns and The Parachute Ending. In other words: shit is dope.

You know the drill: volume up, lights dimmed, headphones on and full-screen. Oh! Right! The credits! Direction by Fleur & Manu, production DIVISION Paris and post production by MATHEMATIC. Enjoy!

Another World

The first CD I purchased with my own money was a used copy of Dig Your Own Hole by The Chemical Brothers, an album which instantly became (and still remains) one of my all-time favorites. I’m happy to report that they’re still making awesome music and hiring the right kind of folks to craft their videos. Speaking of which, ‘Another World’ features direction and visuals by Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall. Enjoy!

Lion in a Coma

We’re absolutely loving Ori Toor‘s final illustration project from the Shenkar School of Engineering and Design. He describes it as a ‘stream of consciousness animation’ that was pieced together frame-by-frame in flash sans any script or prior planning. It’s just marvelous, fluid and über-trippy. Full screen and headphones are a must folks. Tunes by Animal Collective.

A big thanks goes to Aaron Smith for another great submission. Cheers!

True Loves

“It’s a quiet heart – a quiet heart like a car alarm.
Hollow chest, it’s a hollow chest, on a solemn quest to bring a guest into your arms…”

Tyler Vanston (he sent in Rippled last week) passed along this medieval-tinged, ethereal music video that Stray Angel Films and Young Replicant produced for Hooray For Earth. It’s directed by Alex Takacs and Joe Nankin with some fantastic costume design by Lauren Bradley. Enjoy!

Thanks, Tyler!

Metal Spiderwebs

Some hand-drawn animated psychedelia courtesy of Chad VanGaalen (remember that rad video he put together for J. Mascis?) for his futuristic organic alter-ego Black Mold. Good stuff, folks!

A big thanks to J. Sherm for the heads-up!

Iron

“I’m frozen to the bones, I am
A soldier on my own, I don’t know the way;
I’m riding up the heights of shame.
I’m waiting for the call, the hand on the chest;
I’m ready for the fight, and fate…”

The word ‘epic’ springs immediately to mind. Do me a favor? Don’t watch this until you’ve got some time set aside to chill, dim the lights and don some headphones cause this shit is dope and deserves your undivided attention. Tunes and direction courtesy of Yoann Lemoine (a.k.a. Woodkid) with cinematography by Mathieu Plainfosse and post-production via OneMore Prod in Paris. Woodkid’s IRON EP is available now on iTunes. Enjoy!

Fallen

“Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It’s the transition that’s troublesome.”Isaac Asimov

‘Fallen’ was conceived/directed/animated by Wolfram Kampffmeyer and Sascha Geddert. David Christiansen and Sebastian Nozon pitched in their talents as well, handling the music/sound and compositing duties respectively.

Alice

This video by Pogo, a.k.a. Nick Bertke, was composed entirely of chords and vocal samples taken directly from Disney’s 1951 animated classic Alice in Wonderland. After posting it up on the ‘tubes Nick garned a fair amount of attention which lead to loads of cool work for high-profile clients like Pixar. It’s good times all around so grab those headphones and bliss out for a while…

Thanks for sending this in, Jani Saarelainen! It should also be mentioned that Pogo’s entire music catalog is available via a name-your-price storefront. He’s even cool enough to accept ‘$0.00’ but if you’ve got a couple of bucks why not send it his way? This is the type of behavior we should be encourage, wouldn’t you agree?

Squircle Zoom

Don Whitaker wrote in to suggest a video for the site he made entitled ‘Surfing the 4th Dimension’. It’s some pretty high-concept stuff built with a complex ‘slit scan’ technique which is then modified with a custom Processing script and backed with some spacey tunes interspersed with some old dude talking about LSD to boot. It was such an intriguing idea I decided to look through some of his other videos and found this – attracted by the word ‘Squircle’ no doubt (try saying it out loud “squirrr-cull”) – and decided to post it instead of his suggestion. Was this uncouth? Is this not done? I’m just a fan of fractals, OK? Anyways, speaking of fractals, he just made this test video a scant three days ago so I want to encourage this kind of behavior. More please, Don. Oh, and we’ll be friends forever if you make a fractal video set to this tune. #mildpitchforever

Customtone

Astrophonica commissioned Emilski & Nick Duggins of UTILE to put together a video for their upcoming Fracture & Neptune retrospective LP. The abstract, hand-drawn psychedelic visuals are a fitting compliment to the cosmic, spaced-out drum ‘n bass sound of ‘Customtone’ and we’re confident you’ll dig it as much as we did. To hear more from the album head on over to Fracture & Neptune’s soundcloud account (my personal favorite is their bass-heavy remix of Stu Haxton’s ‘Miss Sunrise’). Grab those headphones and enjoy!

Expectation

Loving this Clemens Habicht directed music video for Tame Impala that was filmed entirely with a 360° camera. The proceedings shift from ‘cool’ to ‘magical’ at about half-way through when night falls and the flares come out. Diggin’ the tune, too (they describe their sound as ‘psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock’)  – it’s good-times all-around friends.

P.S. Mr. Habicht also directed the ‘Skeleton Boy’ video tizmatti posted back in November.

Geekdown

“The rules are simple. Pick any song from Stones Throw’s catalog. Edit your own video using any footage you want, upload it to Vimeo.com, and add it to our Vimeo group: http://vimeo.com/groups/stonesthrow15 You can do anything you like as long as it’s CREATIVE - shoot new footage, animation, found footage, or combination. Our deadline is July 1, 2011…more

We’re huge fans of Stones Throw and were beyond excited to find out that they’re throwing an open-to-all video contest to celebrate their 15th anniversary. The video above was submitted by Steven Smith for the J Dilla (RIP) joint, ‘Geekdown’ and we absolutely love it. Hopefully there’s lots more like it from other creative fans on the way.

A huge, massive thanks goes to one of our readers, Victoria, for the heads-up on this one – CHEERS!

“Kris spent his youth in rural seclusion and isolation along with a blue-collar, working mother, two significantly older brothers, and an absent father. Open country, sparse trees, and alcoholic stepfather, all paving the way for an individual saturated in imagination and introversion. His propensity for the unusual has been a constant since childhood, a lifelong fascination that lent itself to his macabre art later in life. The grotesque to him, as it seemed, was beautiful…more

Kris Kuksi is a super-talented painter/sculptor whose work is exhibited in galleries all over the world and collected by folks like Robin Williams and Guillermo del Toro. The six images I have collected here are but a small sampling so, if you dig what you see, be sure head over to Kris’ site to see loads more.

In honor of today, the twentieth of April, we’ll be posting some ‘best of The Tripatorium™’ over on our Facebook page. Your presence is officially requested.
