Good Vibrations

Experience the world of various vibrations we hear and see every day, only slowed down 1000 times. This short but sweet video was created by the crew at Fluke Technologies. I’m assuming this was done for promotional purposes, but I’ll be damned if I can figure out what these guys are trying to sell. Calibration and testing products? It’s all greek to me, but if they’re cool enough to spread trippy vibes via the interwebs, then I’m a fan!

My favorite part is the cymbal, btw :)

The Cat Piano

“So you’ve heard of every instrument but?
Torn from your history books is this pianola,
This harpsichord of harm.
The cruelest instrument to spawn from man’s grey cerebral soup.
The Cat Piano.”

KC Gordon posted this gem to our Facebook wall over a week ago and it’s a shame that it took us so long to get it up on the site. ‘The Cat Piano’ is a fantastic eight-and-a-half minute animated short based on a poem by Eddie White. Eddie, along with Ari Gibson, directed the film, Nick Cave provided the narration and animation duties were expertly handled by The People’s Republic of Animation. The whole film is great but we especially enjoy the sequence that starts at 4:52. Enjoy!

Thanks for the heads-up, KC! If you’ve got anything that you think would be perfect for The Tripatorium™ you can submit your suggestions either here on the site or on our Facebook page.

Neckbrace

Chris wrote in again (he’s the kind fellow who sent us Wanderlust and Mykonos) with this wonderfully bizarre E*VAX directed bird-tastic music video for RATATAT. We love it. Maybe you will, too?

Thanks again, Chris!

Mykonos

“Brother you don’t need to turn me away, I was waiting down at the ancient gate;
You’ll go, wherever you go today, you’ll go today.”

Encourage your Saturday night mellow with this most chill of pairings: the delicious haunting harmonies of Fleet Foxes served alongside the abstract cut-paper stop motion visions of Sean Pecknold. Both Sean and ‘Foxes have been featured on The Tripatorium™ before which can be handily accessed through the following two hyperlinks: Knowledge / Grown Ocean.

A big thanks goes to Chris for the suggestion – cheers!

Partitura 001

“Inspired by the studies of artists such as Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oscar Fischinger and Norman McLaren, the images generated by Partitura are based on a precise and coherent system of relationships between various types of geometries. The main characteristic of this system is its horizontal linear structure, like that of a musical score. It is along this linear environment that the different classes of abstract elements are created and evolve over time according to the sound…more

It’s Saturday night! What are y’all up to? Can I make a suggestion? Watch the attached video on the largest, highest resolution screen you’ve got and run the sound through the best speakers/headphones available. Enjoy!

Oh! Right! The credits! Partitura is an ongoing collaborative software project between Abstract Birds and Quayola that’s built in vvvv. Tunes by Telefon Tel Aviv.

Levi Beamish wrote in and asked us to check out a ‘video portrait’ he made with a, “simple practical effect achieved by stacking 100 video layers, pushing each layer one frame out of sync and [then] cropping [it] to 1% of [its original] size”. It’s the same concept used in the ‘Vital Signs’ video we posted back in March (be sure to check that one out of you haven’t seen it yet).

Short but sweet, we likey. The Kid Cudi backing tune was a nice touch, Levi; its just right for the visuals. Thanks for writing in!

I lived on the Moon

Yannick Puig was commissioned to direct and produce this strange and surreal music video for Sandy Lavallart (a.k.a. Kwoon). If you’re interested, head on over to Yannick’s website for a behind-the-scenes look into the inspiration and creative process that went into making the film. A big thanks goes to ‘bugy’ for the heads up on this one. Cheers!

Journey Through A Melting Brain

“Strata-cut animation is most commonly a form of clay animation in which a long bread-like “loaf” of clay, internally packed with varying imagery, is sliced into thin sheets, with the animation camera taking a frame of the end of the loaf for each cut, eventually revealing the movement of the internal images within.”

In the mid-90’s David Daniels revived and refined the stratacut animation technique that was originally pioneered in the 1920s by German animator Oskar Fischinger. The attached video is a montage of some of Daniels’ best sequences – prepare yourselves to bask in the weirdness. Enjoy!

Yes I Know

If you enjoy the mind-bending and the bizarre then prepare to meet one of your new favorite videos. Eric Epstein conceived, directed, edited, animated and composited – with production assistance from m ss ng p eces – this monster of a music video for Memory Tapes. It’s perfect viewing material for a late-night weekend decompression and chill session so we heartily recommend you watch it on the largest, highest-definition screen you’ve got. The whole thing is weird, well executed and wonderful but we especially enjoyed the flocking birds sequence at the end. All-in-all a treat, friends – enjoy!

True Loves (Cyriak)

We featured the original music video for ‘True Loves’ by Hooray For Earth not too long ago so we were pleasantly surprised when Mark wrote in to inform us that Cyriak recently completed a video for the Cereal Spiller’s remix of the same tune. Shit’s dope folks, what else would you expect from Sir Cyriak himself? If you’ve got an HDTV to watch this on I heartily recommend you dig out whatever cable/dongle you need to get your computer hooked up to it cause this video is perfect for viewing on a comfy couch in a darkened room with the sound cranked. Enjoy!

Cheers, Mark! Thanks for the heads up!

Quantum Leap

Take an audio/visual synced trip through the wormhole via the visual stylings of Thomas de Rijk and the bass-heavy glitch-synth sounds of Slugabed. Full screened/headphones for this one folks – might as well crank the volume while you’re getting them plugged in, too – and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the feline-deity who sustains us all.

Thomas has lots of other cool, trippy shit on his site, why not head on over?

Jeu

“A film about the frenetic pace of modern life, Jeu is set to scherzo of Prokofiev’s Concerto for Piano No. 2, Opus 16. The film has received 12 international awards, including the Silver Dove Award from the international jury for animated film at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film, the award for best experimental/abstract animation under 35 minutes at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, and a Special International Jury Prize at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival. Jeu is co-produced by the National Film Board of Canada and Studio GDS…more on wikipedia

Jeff Sipko wrote in with this fantastic animated short by Georges Schwizgebel that was funded by the National Film Board of Canada. The best way I can think of to describe it is: Cézanne meets M.C. Escher. It’s as rad as it sounds, friends – enjoy!

Thanks, Jeff!

Kaleido-Lapse

Colorful time lapse photography + Björk + Ratatat * Kaleidoscopic filtering = Some trippy business. Full-screen this bitch and bask in the vibes, friends.

Well done, RebootYourComputer, well done.

Shift v2

Short but sweet; Jimmy Yuan of mirari brings the abstract, tightly animated goodness. From the looks of their website, mirari has only released short bits like SHIFT v2 thus far but we’re hoping they tackle a longer-form project soon.

Noise Trade

We’re diggin’ this music video that garth+ginny put together for Three Trapped Tigers. Maybe you will too?

Vismic Rhythm

Y’all remember Steven Smith, right? (hint-hint) He was kind enough to write in and tell us about one of his other psychedelic-funky-fresh videos (this one’s set to some Flying Lotus) that’s conveniently embedded above. Why not check it out? If they haven’t already Tim & Eric should consider hiring Steve cause he’s got a firm grasp on bringing the bizarre. Oh and it looks like he’s into this datamoshing thing, too! Nice!

Steve: we love your stuff – thanks for writing in! Cheers!

Thanks, Arian!

Datamosh

“Now that television transmissions have gone completely digital you have probably seen this effect before.  You’re watching TV and then suddenly the image freezes.  Then, instead of glitching back to the next shot, its as if the next shot appears to be wearing the information from the previous shot.  It’s a surreal effect that can be hard to explain.”

Don Whitaker (of Squircle Zoom fame) wrote in to tell us about a video mashup technique called ‘datamoshing’ that, “uses video compression artifacts as a composition tool”. If you’re interested in trying it for yourself be sure to check out this three part tutorial that utilizes free, readily-available-on-the-internets software.

The attached music video – for the tune Mande Burung by Odelia – was created by Charlie Visnic and is an excellent application of the technique. Mind-bending, mellow and trip-tastic – enjoy!

Thanks for the heads-up, Don!

How Will You Create The Universe?

“How will it be when you can choose what you turn into? Time to grooooooooow!”

It’s a two-for-one Encyclopedia Pictura Friday! These guys – Isaiah Saxon, Sean Hellfritsch and Daren Rabinovitch – make such awesome stuff. Can some big Hollywood studio just give them gobs of money to make a full-length feature?

Wanderlust

“I am leaving this harbour, giving urban a farewell. It’s habitants seem too keen on God, I cannot stomach their rights and wrongs”

I had mentioned Wanderlust before but never got around to posting the actual video which is a fairly egregious oversight considering 1) it kicks serious ass and 2) we have featured loads of other cool-but-not-as-cool-as-this Björk stuff. One of our readers, Chris, wrote in and suggested it was time to make that shit happen and so here we are.

Oh! Now I remember why I didn’t post it! It’s ‘cause it hadn’t been uploaded in HD to the ‘Tubes yet! Ok, whatever; this is unimportant. What is important is who made it: Isaiah Saxon, Sean Hellfritsch and Daren Rabinovitch, a.k.a. Encyclopedia Pictura. They’re crazy talented dudes and have recently started to upload lots of great watchables to their Vimeo and YouTube pages, like this great process video on how they made Wanderlust.

NOTE: If you have one of those fancy 3D TVs/computers you can experience Wanderlust with an additional dimension. That’s 50% more dimensions than 2D! Enjoy!
