Italian artist/designer/illustrator/photographer, Alberto Seveso, dropped colored ink into water and then photographed it at high-speed. Brilliant. He was kind enough to create a series of hi-res wallpapers using the same technique. Also brilliant. See more of Alberto’s work on his website.

“Does the idea that there might be knowledge frighten you? Does the idea that one afternoon on wiki-fucking-pedia might enlighten-you-frighten-you? Does the notion that there might not be a supernatural so blow your hippy noodle that you’d just rather stand in the fog of your inability to Google?”
Most of what we post here on The Tripatorium™ is fairly short and bite-sized so it’s always nice to come across something that’s a bit longer-form. This one is a treat – an instant classic – that rare bit of internet that simultaneously brings the LOL, provokes conscious thought and servers as a reminder of how beautiful and complex our collective existence is. ‘Storm’ began as a beat-poem by Australian comedian/performer Tim Minchin and was transformed into the animation you’re watching now by the talented DC Turner, a director/designer/animator currently freelancing in London. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

“One frame of this image was taken each Jupiter day (approximately 10 hours) between January 6 and February 9, 1979, as the space probe [Voyager I] flew from 58 million to 31 million kilometers from Jupiter during that time. The small, round, dark spots appearing in some frames are the shadows cast by the moons passing between Jupiter and the Sun, while the small, white flashes around the planet, are the moons themselves.”
Inspired by the gorgeous shot of Jupiter’s ‘Great Red Spot’ tizmatti posted a couple of weeks back, I decided to read up on Jupiter’s unique atmosphere. Turns out it’s a pretty tumultuous place comprised of constantly shifting cloud layers and swirling, violent vortices (of which the ‘Great Red Spot’ is the largest). It’s truly fascinating stuff.

“1923 aka Heaven is one of two animation loops directed by Max Hattler, inspired by the work of French outsider artist Augustin Lesage. 1923 is based on Lesage’s painting ‘A symbolic Composition of the Spiritual World’ from 1923.”
If we ever get time travel sorted out it’d be wonderful to go back to the 1920s and show Mr. Lesage what kind of art we’re making in the 21st century. I’d imagine he properly flip out.
Max also created a companion piece – 1925 aka Hell – that you might be interested in seeing as well. Oh, and before I forget…PROTIP: After you click play, right-click (or control+click if you are using a single-button mouse on a Mac) inside the video and select ‘Turn Loop ON’ for an infinite journey. Enjoy!

Five students from French school of animation (and awesome), Gobelins – Remi Bastie, Nicolas Dehghani, Jonathan Djob Nkondo, NIcolas Pegon and Jérémy Pires – created this stop-motion/2D animated trip-fest of a music video during their internship at WIZZ (you know, that super-rad production house that makes stuff like this). It’s deliciously strange and surprisingly bizarre which, coincidentally, is just how I likes ‘em. Oh, and the backing tune is ‘Judgement Day’ by UK grime hip-hop outfit, The Thunderclaps. Enjoy!

A gorgeously animated take on the bizarre world of bullfighting packed with strange visions, hallucinations and loads of symbolism. It’s rather nice, really. MATATORO was directed and animated by Mauro Carraro, Raphaël Calamote and Jérémy Pasquet, all students at the Arles campus of Supinfocom in France. Well done, lads!

“Twice a year, SDO enters an eclipse season where the spacecraft slips behind Earth for up to 72 minutes a day. Unlike the crisp shadow one sees on the sun during a lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow has a variegated edge due to its atmosphere, which blocks the sun light to different degrees depending on its density.”

Zach wrote in and proclaimed that this video was, and I quote, “the bee’s knees.” We’re not entomologists so we can’t confirm nor deny his assertion but what we can say is that this Phantasmic directed music video for Morning Teleportation‘s “Expanding Anyway” is a psychedelic, colorful and impishly bizarre journey through gobs of playful imagery. It’s good times all the way ‘round – enjoy!
P.S. If you’re interested in how Phantasmic put this whole affair together click here for some fascinating insight into their process.

Cayla Darling was kind enough to write in and tell us about an animation Cyriak created for Short Stories, a Showtime-sponsored series that challenges filmmakers to “tell a short story in an innovative way.” Mr. Harris’ chosen story was that of evolution and, as usual, delivered the goods. Thanks for the internets, Cayla!

TENDRIL – a motion design house based in Toronto, Canada – wanted to “rediscover [their] inspirations for getting into the industry and identify the things that were killing [their] inspiration.” Out of that desire came the idea to create a series of shorts that would communicate who they are and what they like to make. SEED is the first of these shorts and, judging by how it turned out, we’re excited to see what they’ll post next. Concept/direction by Vini Nascimento; sound design courtesy of CypherAudio‘s John Black.
