It’s Called “Moon”

Straight-away I was reminded of Jake Fried, but only in materials/process. It’s clear that Emanuele is also intuitively fleshing out the movement frame-by-frame as he goes but his work is unique in that there’s no figurative elements to recognize; only abstract geometry and form that, when quilted together, comes across as both familiar and foreign.

I’m reminded of the notebooks I used to fill with random scribbles while bored out of my mind in high school: I’d start with a stray line or a random shape and then try to make sense of it with the remaining paper, as if the choatic mess left by my pen was what I had intended to create from the beginning. It was a way to pass the time and entertain myself instead of blankly staring at the clock, fantasizing about the bell that would eventually set me free.

Thanks for passing this one along, Sam Lillard!

P.S. I recommend giving Jake’s work a look when you’re done here.

Limitless

When Ironlak discovered a large warehouse in Brisbane was marked for demolition they arranged for Sofles, Fintan Magee, Treas and Quench to have unfettered access to its interior walls. Luckily, Selina Miles was there to capture their aerosol orgy in gorgeous time lapse so we could all experience what happened. ENJOY!

Thanks for writing in to share this with us, Nathan! Cheers!!

Macro Timelapse

Today’s allotment of mellow vibes comes courtesy of Daniel Csobot (visuals) and Daniel Gautreau (tunes). ENJOY!

If you enjoyed the attached and would like to see more videos like it, I’d suggesting visiting our time lapse feed next.

Kuba Krzeminski

Man. Today was just shitty. In these kinds of moments my instinct is just to tune out for a bit and watching this video of Kuba Krzemiński helped me do just that. It’s hypnotic watching any talented artist work in time lapse but the attached is especially great due to some tight editing, tracking shots and mellow music selection.

Enjoy!

P.S. Both our time lapse and hypnotic feeds are worth a visit.

Bear Warrior

I like watching people draw, especially in time lapse. All great illustrators have a dance to their process; a flitting to-and-fro across the surface of their chosen medium, alternating between quick, broad constructive strokes and OCD-driven micro-adjustments of detail. My favorite parts in the above video are when Denman revisits something he’s already ‘completed’ – pay attention to his repeat attempts at the protagonist’s weapons and troll/orc tattoos in particular. He’s not only experimenting with different stylistic approaches but evolving the proportions as well, refining and adjusting until both feel ‘right’.

If you enjoyed the attached as much as I did then be sure to head over to Denman’s website to see more of his work or his Vimeo page which has lots more in-process videos. Enjoy!

P.S. ‘Bear Warrior’ was selected to be in this year’s Spectrum (#19, pre-order here). Whoa! Congrats, Mr. Rooke!

Lost in Tokyo

Jamie Blackley wrote in suggesting we check out this gorgeous video Mark Bramley edited together from 10,000 stills and some handheld footage he shot during a recent trip to Tokyo where he had two days to himself (jelly!). It’s rad from start-to-finish but we especially enjoyed the mass-transit wormhole (0:36), Gumby slidin’ (1:13), elevator pong-paddles (2:00) and the landing strip time-lapse (2:31). If you’re digging the backing tune – Parametaphoriquement by GMZ – go ahead and download it for (legal) freesies as it’s CC licensed on ccMixter.

Jamie also mentioned that it’s reminiscent of Shinkansen ver.2. We agree. Watch that shit if you haven’t already. Oh and Tokyo Slo-Mode, too; also good. Fuck it: just check out all the stuff we’ve posted about Japan, OK?

Thanks for the tip on this one, Jamie! Cheers!

Changing Education Paradigms

“An aesthetic experience is one in which your senses are operating at their peak; when you’re present in the current moment; when you’re resonating with the excitement of this thing that you’re experiencing; when you’re fully alive. Anaesthetic is when you shut your senses off and deaden yourself to what is happening and a lot of these drugs are that. We are getting our children through education by anesthetizing them and I think we should be doing the exact opposite; we shouldn’t be putting them to sleep we should be waking them up.”

I was first introduced to Sir Ken Robinson via his super-popular/awesome TED talk on how schools kill creativity, originally posted back in 2006. This more recent lecture at the RSA covers similar ground and will resonate with anyone who has found themselves profoundly bored while sitting behind a desk, waiting desperately for the bell to ring. The accompanying time-lapse white board animation (created by Cognitive Media and a signature of the RSA Animate series) is an excellent complement to Sir Ken’s rapid-fire delivery, helping to drive home complex points with an ease anyone can follow. Time to get your learn on…

Earth

“Time lapse sequences of photographs taken with a special low-light 4K-camera by the crew of expedition 28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October, 2011.”

I have a new favorite video on the internet! It’s this one! You should check it out! Holy shit this is so dope; dim the lights, turn the volume way up and full screen this bitch immediately. Michael König took the contemplative, ethereal ambient breaks of the super-talented Jan Jelinek and combined them with high-definition (4K!) low-light time lapses that NASA took recently and were cool enough to give away for free online.

PRO TIP: Keep your eyes peeled for the minuscule thunderstorms and ribboning, neon auroras. Thanks again, internet.

The Lullaby

This time lapse video of Joe Fenton drawing is a bit deceiving; since the lighting remains consistent and his wardrobe only appears to change a few times you might think he completed The Lullaby in a matter of a few days.

It took two months.

As I was watching full-screen – the progress bar and UI conveniently hidden away – I kept thinking the video was about to end; how much more detail could he possibly add? What else was there left to do? Just graphite on Arches would have sufficed but Joe pushes it to some next-level shit when he busts out the airbrush, white gouache and muted water watercolors to further enhance its three-dimensionality.

The backing music by his brother, Julian, is a nice compliment to the visuals: mysterious, ethereal and subdued. Full screen and headphones, y’all.

To see see more of Joe’s work head on over to his Behance page or website.

Homunculus

“Taking its title from the Latin word for “Little Human”, the piece is an associative mashup between the two concepts behind the word: The first being middle-age alchemical beliefs that “little men” could be spontaneous generated from dead or decaying matter. The second being Carl Jung’s usage as a personification of pure id…more

Set phasers to bizarre; this short film, directed by Sam Stephens and created by Hydra – the in-house collaborative directing team at NYC-based Humble TV – provides an ample, potent dose of weirdness. Enjoy!

A Bridge Too Far

“As part of the M1 motorway upgrade scheme the Highways Agency (Yorkshire and Humber) closed the A1, North Yorkshire between Junction 60 (near Darlington) and Junction 49 (Dishforth). Saturday 9 April - Sunday 10 April 2011”

Time lapse has a way of distorting reality that can sometimes provide new perspectives beyond the obvious ‘this is what things would look like if everything moved faster.’ For one, I never noticed how construction equipment looks a lot like insects. Another: human beings have come a long way. If it was possible to significantly increase the time lapse interval (from seconds to centuries) we could witness first hand the insane reality that we’ve gone from nomadic hunter-gatherers to bridge-builders(/destroyers) to iPhone designers in just a handful of millennia. Whoa.

James Miller (the chap who created this) made the right call for the soundtrack; Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà‘s I. Relaxed Groove is anything but, tumbling along with a frentic, exacting precision that’s a fitting compliment to what’s happening in frame.

A big thanks to Ian Bertolacci who suggested we check it out. Cheers!

Compressed 02

What we have is an interesting short film by Kim Pimmel that demonstrates how ferrofluid reacts when presented with the structure of soap bubbles. If you like stuff like this, then be sure to check out part 1 of the series as well.

This video was brought to my attention by the wonderful Creators Project. It would be worth your time to check out their site and see what they are offering up.

Hayaku

Brad Kremer shot these gorgeous time lapse sequences of Tokyo, Matsuyama, Imabari, Nagano, Gifu, and Ishizushisan during a 2009 summer trip to Japan. The first half is a buzzing, Röyksopp-backed, energetic romp through busy city streets while the second act mellows out (no doubt helped by the ambient strains of The Album Leaf), shifting the focus to the unique coastlines, rolling hills and foggy mountains of Japan’s iconic natural landscape. It’s just the right length too – almost eight full minutes – so grab your headphones, get the full-screen up ons and enjoy the scenery.

She Just Likes to Fight

chutieboy took some time-lapse footage shot by Philip Bloom, kaleidoscope-o-fied it and then set it to some chilled-out Four Tet. After being subjected to our stringent approval process this video was unanimously deemed, ‘Suitable for mellow reflection and contemplation after a long weekend of merry-making.’ Recommended use instructions: full screen HD and headphones. Enjoy!

Voyager 1 Approaches Jupiter

'Voyager I approaches Jupiter'

“One frame of this image was taken each Jupiter day (approximately 10 hours) between January 6 and February 9, 1979, as the space probe [Voyager I] flew from 58 million to 31 million kilometers from Jupiter during that time. The small, round, dark spots appearing in some frames are the shadows cast by the moons passing between Jupiter and the Sun, while the small, white flashes around the planet, are the moons themselves.”

Inspired by the gorgeous shot of Jupiter’s ‘Great Red Spot’ tizmatti posted a couple of weeks back, I decided to read up on Jupiter’s unique atmosphere. Turns out it’s a pretty tumultuous place comprised of constantly shifting cloud layers and swirling, violent vortices (of which the ‘Great Red Spot’ is the largest). It’s truly fascinating stuff.

Northern Lights Post #3

While I’m aware that respondcreate already posted some great content relating to our most impressive of natural phenomenons, I thought I would go ahead and throw this video up on the site because, well, it’s a video, it’s in HD, and it’s stunning. Terje Sorgjerd captured one of the largest Aurora Borealis events in years as it occurred over national parks bordering Russia (so think remote, wild, and very very cold). He has some other great HD videos up, so check them all out, especially the one detailing the beauty of Norway and it’s landscape.

Tokyo-based photographer, Samuel Cockedey, shot these gorgeous time lapses around Mount Fuji, Miyajima and Iwate prefecture. The backing soundtrack is One Perfect Sunrise by Orbital & Lisa Gerrard. This one’s a stunner, enjoy!

The Fungus Among Us

Thought you folks would enjoy some gorgeous HD goodness from Planet Earth about jungle fungus. The main star of the show is the uber-spooky cordyceps which seems as if it was invented for an episode of X-Files. Other than that it’s Sir David Attenborough doing his thing alongside beautifully captured time-lapse footage. You can’t go wrong, really.
